Don’t Let Periodontal Disease Take Away Your Beautiful Smile

Your gums are essential for maintaining good oral health. Neglecting gum hygiene can lead to the accumulation of bacteria and dental plaque, resulting in inflammation and damage to the gums. This condition is known as periodontal (gum) disease, which infects the tissues supporting and surrounding your teeth. Additionally, the effects can extend below the gum line, breaking down the attachments of the teeth and their supporting structures.

Symptoms of Gum Disease:

  • Red, swollen, and tender gums
  • Pus and pockets between gums and teeth
  • Receding gums
  • Gums that bleed during or after brushing, flossing, or eating hard foods
  • Loose, shifting, or separating teeth
  • Persistent bad breath and a metallic taste in the mouth
  • Mouth sores
  • Changes in the fit of dentures and how teeth align during bites

The Stages of Gum Disease: From Gingivitis to Periodontitis

Periodontal diseases are classified based on the severity of the infection and are traditionally divided into two stages: Gingivitis and Periodontitis.

Gingivitis:

Gingivitis is a common infection characterized by inflammation of the gums. It often begins with the accumulation of bacteria in the mouth. The buildup of plaque causes the gums to become red, swollen, and prone to bleeding. Gingivitis is frequently a result of poor oral hygiene, inadequate nutrition, and certain medical conditions.

If left untreated, gingivitis can progress to periodontitis.

Periodontitis:

Periodontitis is the advanced stage of gingivitis, where severe infection erodes the supporting structures of the teeth. This progressive loss and destruction of bones, teeth, and gums weaken the attachments and can lead to tooth loosening.

Prevention of Gum Disease:

Daily oral hygiene practices such as brushing, flossing, and using an antiseptic mouthwash are critical in preventing gum diseases. Use fluoridated toothpaste and replace your toothbrush every one to three months. Maintaining a proper diet is essential for the health of your gums and teeth; limit the consumption of sugary foods and drinks, as sugar promotes bacterial adhesion and accumulation.

  • Limit sugar intake to main meals.
  • Drink plenty of water to help reduce inflammation by promoting saliva production, which dilutes toxins from plaque.
  • Regular dental visits and examinations can help identify and address potential infections. As the disease progresses, more intensive treatments may be required.
